A county housebuilder is campaigning for safe play alternatives for children this summer.

Barratt Homes, a leading developer in Worcestershire, is urging parents to steer clear of construction sites and opt for safer activity locations such as parks, playgrounds and leisure centres.

This aims to ensure children's safety and contribute towards their physical and mental wellbeing.

As the summer holidays approach, Barratt Homes has emphasised the dangers of building sites, citing heavy machinery and uneven ground, amongst other hazards.

With children having a natural tendency to explore new environments during their long break from school, the developer is highlighting the importance of taking precautions.

The initiative comes in the wake of a survey conducted by The Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

Nearly half (46 per cent) of the 2,000 UK parents surveyed with children aged 12 and under, expressed concern over their children's safety during the summer holidays.

Adrian Evans, managing director at the housebuilder's West Midlands division, said: "We understand that children are full of energy and curiosity, especially during the summer holidays.

"Our goal is to guide families towards safe and enjoyable activities that keep children active without exposing them to the dangers of construction sites."

The developer has provided a list of recommended alternatives for safe play areas.

These include parks and playgrounds, which offer open spaces for running, climbing and other physical activities.

Plenty of parks also have playground equipment appropriate for children of a variety of ages.

Leisure centres are also suggested, as they often host supervised summer programmes and activities, such as arts and crafts and group games.

Walking and cycling routes in the area also make for good family outings.

Mr Evans added: "Activities like running, climbing, and playing sports in safe, designated areas are crucial for a child’s development.

"By steering clear of construction sites and opting for these alternatives, we can ensure our children have a fun, active, and safe summer.

"We are committed to raising awareness and promoting safety within our communities.

"We urge parents to discuss these safety tips with their children and explore the various safe play alternatives available."
