A TEENAGER will be tackling a fundraising run with her mother after just finishing two years of treatment for leukaemia.
Lucy Ballinger, 17, will be joined by mum Jennie at the Race for Life Worcester Pretty Muddy 5k obstacle course at Worcester Racecourse on Saturday for Cancer Research UK.
The family live in Rushwick, near Worcester, and Jennie said: “Lucy has just rung her end of treatment bell.
“Lucy was diagnosed with leukaemia aged 15 after a period of becoming increasingly unwell.
“She was treated at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Worcestershire Royal Hospital. It was a two-year treatment plan.
“Lucy was cared for brilliantly by kind, dedicated NHS professionals at both hospitals and by the community nursing team.
“She had several emergency hospital admissions during her treatment due to illness and infection and she received life-saving blood transfusions on several occasions.
“Lucy was part of a research project and drugs trial ALLTogether1 since diagnosis.
“The aim is to find kinder treatments for cancer patients to reduce the harm caused by chemotherapy.
“Lucy finished chemotherapy in June so participation in this race means a lot to her and to our family.
“We all wish to say thank you and raise money for Cancer Research to fund research to help save other people.”
Jennie added: “Lucy is a brave, resilient person who has faced her diagnosis and treatment with courage.
“She has worked hard and secured an engineering apprenticeship for September.
“She is getting her life back on track and enjoying life.
“We’re looking forward to completing the mud run together.”
