AN indoor summer barbecue proved a big hit with all generations as the founder said the open door cafe showed Warndon's powerful community spirit 'at its finest'.

The barbecue was held at the Open Door Cafe at the Warndon Hub on Shap Drive in Warndon, Worcester, on Saturday with the event paid for by some of the money raised by a sponsored walk.

It was an opportunity for people to get together and socialise before the summer break.

The open door cafe will restart on September 14, running from noon until 1.30pm each Saturday until Christmas.

Jase Clay had organised and completed a 23 mile sponsored walk for the cafe and had the idea of holding an indoor BBQ, describing it as 'a team effort from everybody to make it happen'.

Dishes included jerk chicken, sausages and hamburgers along with vegetarian haloumi burgers all served with Jamaican rice and peas. This treat was funded by some of the £1,200 raised by the sponsored walk and there were many dishes brought in by residents.

Salads of rice and pasta were donated and also the delicious sausages bought from a local farm shop. Several scrumptious cakes were made by regular attendees and Cllr Jill Desayrah made three types of ice-cream. A team of volunteers was on hand to help prepare and serve the meals with Jase working in the kitchen making teas and coffees."

Cllr Jill Desayrah, one of the cafe’s founders, said “The dining hall was full to capacity and the party atmosphere was brilliant. This is what “community” looks like in Warndon. More than 50 meals were served to diners ranging in age from two to 95.

"We take our summer break now to recharge our batteries and will return on 14th September. When we come back we will be talking with Jase to organise another special event to celebrate Christmas."

Everyone is welcome at the open door cafe.
