TRAFFIC gridlock caused by a monster truck show has been the subject of a review.

Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member for highways, told a meeting of the full council that the types of events staged at Pitchcroft are now also being reviewed.

Cllr Bayliss said: “The monster truck event caused serious congestion around Worcester.

“Unfortunately the promoter did not manage the number of arrivals effectively and lengthy queues were created on the public highway, with the worst queues on Barbourne Road and London Road, which are two important corridors.

“There were a number of mistakes made by the traffic management company working for the event, who had also failed to get a number of required permissions.

“This event has subsequently been reviewed by the cross-agency advisory group which includes the police, the city council, trading standards, ambulance, highways and emergency planning, and, as a result, the type of results being staged at Pitchcroft is now being considered by the city council as landowner.

“In addition, a follow-up meeting with the promotor is taking place to talk through the issues and how these can be avoided in the future.”

After the event, organiser David Bailey said visitors had not listened to pleas to use other car parks and to walk or use public transport to get to the venue.

“It's people not listening to what we were saying - 'please use public transport where possible and walk if you can and please use city centre car parks, please use infrastructure in the town and try to avoid Pitchcroft'.”

“But people don't listen - and we're the bad people,” he said.
