A WOMAN who is battling back after major surgery has organised a 12 hour spinathon to raise funds for the hospital charity that helped transform her life.

Kerry Papps has organised the 12-hour Spinathon challenge to raise money for The Royal Orthopaedic Charity to help others continue to receive the best possible care.

The fundraiser takes place on Saturday, July 27, from 7am to 7pm at Anytime Fitness in Malvern.

It is open to members of the public to get involved, and aims to raise funds for the charity, whilst covering as many miles as possible in just 12 hours.

The challenge has been created by gym member Mrs Papps after she received extensive treatment at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

The charity helps people get access to the latest equipment and technology to treat even more people and conduct more ground-breaking research to improve care, cure disease and save lives.

Her treatment started in July 2023 after an X-ray found an aggressive Giant Cell Tumour in her left wrist. Her first surgery involved removing the radius bone, which was replaced with temporary custom metal plating.

The second surgery, in February 2024, involved the fibula being removed from Mrs Papps' leg to be grafted into her arm, a nine-hour operation.

She will know if the graft in her arm has been successful within the next six to nine months.

The Royal Orthopaedic Charity support the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, to deliver the best care possible. Their projects help to ensure all patients have an amazing experience when they visit the hospital.

Donations have enabled the development of staff, funded enhanced equipment and enabled pioneering research.

Kerry Papps said: “I have been a member at Anytime Fitness for six years, and Mia, the manager, has helped me on my road to recovery building muscle and getting my fitness back after months of being inactive.

“The oncology surgeons, the plastic surgeon team, and staff at the hospital have been incredible. They deserve a medal for the pressure they work under every day, and so much of this hard work and dedication to saving lives goes unseen, so I want to shout from the rooftops how great they have been and try to give back what I have received.”

Mia Noble, Regional Manager at Anytime Fitness said: “We would love you to donate and join us in this event, people don’t have to do the full 12 hours, they can book a bike and just be a part of this fantastic team. There will be cakes available so please feel free to pop in and say hi. We are looking forward to seeing how far we can travel in just 12 hours.”

With 10 bikes per session, people can book a bike on the hour between 7am to 7pm, people don’t have to be a gym member to take part, they are asking for a minimum £5 donation to the charity.
