SUSHI isn't cheap.

That's likely the most obvious thing you have read this week, but it's true. The restaurants and supermarket stands are great quality but expensive, and making it at home can be really difficult, or end up looking quite disappointing.

That's where Too Good To Go comes in. This environmentally-friendly app helps to prevent food waste by giving businesses the chance to sell food on its use-by date at a cheaper price.

And, while it helps the companies sell items rather than throwing it out for nothing, the real advantage of Too Good To Go is the bargains that consumers can pick up.

While the prices can vary, bags are generally around 30-35 per cent of the full price.

For this YO! Sushi bag from their counter in Tesco on Mill Wood Drive, Worcester, I was guaranteed at least £15 worth of items for £5.

A very good deal for freshly prepared sushi and street food.

However, that price is just a minimum, and I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted with an ensemble of products worth much more than that.

What's inside a YO! Sushi Too Good To Go bag?

Inside the bag, there was:

  • Spicy salmon and avocado crunch roll (£3.40)
  • California roll (£4.95)
  • Chicken katsu crunch roll (£5.50)
  • Korean style beef rib rice bowl (£6.25)

That's £20.10 of food for just £5. But price is just one part of the equation. The food still needs to taste good for it to be worth it.

After the first bite of one of the rolls, it became clear that taste wouldn't be an issue.

The California rolls tasted like they had come straight from the kitchen.

Considering these were almost £5 by themselves, I was feeling confident about my purchase.

Next up was the chicken katsu rolls. While slightly sticky, the rolls were still delicious. Both items so far had been fantastic.

The spicy salmon and avocado crunch rolls may have been the cheapest item in the bag, but were undoubtedly the best part. The fish tasted fresh and was really good quality.

Lastly, there was the Korean-style beef rib rice bowl, which needed heating in the microwave.

At £6.25, it would normally be more expensive than the whole bag and was a main meal in itself.

The beef was soft and fell apart and the rice was flavourful. While the vegetables were slightly harder than normal, overall it was a very good dish.

Is Too Good To Go worth it?

So, what's the verdict? This Too Good To Go bag was well worth the money.

The food was still great quality and wouldn't have been out of place being sold at full price.

Not every bag will have the same items but, if you're a sushi lover like me, anything from YO! for a quarter of the price is a bargain.
