PLANS for hot air balloons to fill the air tonight have been scuppered by high winds.

Worcester Balloon Festival organisers have announced that Friday’s ascent cannot go ahead.

They are waiting for an update on Balloon Glow as the festival kicks off on Pitchcroft for the first night.

They said: “BALLOON UPDATE- BALLOONS NOT FLYING DUE TO WINDS!

“The conditions are not safe enough for the pilots to fly tonight. The balloon directors have been in touch with the Met Office and the winds are too high.

“Please understand that all decisions are made for the safety of the pilots and the attendees. While we understand that this is disappointing, this is the nature of any balloon event.

“A meeting will be held shortly regarding the balloon glow.”

Last year, balloons were unable to fly on Friday but did take off on Saturday.

Worcester Balloon Festival takes place today and tomorrow with Monster Truck Mayhem taking place on Sunday.

Update: Organisers said: “Due to the wind and predicted rain, there will be a basket glow to heat everyone up! Followed by the fireworks!”
