WORCESTERSHIRE has become a hotspot for illegal vape businesses in the UK.

Data released from councils across the UK shows Worcestershire to have the 8th highest number of businesses caught stocking illegal vaping products between January 1, 2023 and February 29, 2024.

47 stores in the county were reported to have sold the items.

In the same period of time, 9,101 illegal vapes and 7,251 illegal cigarettes were seized by West Mercia Police and Worcestershire Trading Standards.

It is against the law for anyone under the age of 18 to use vapes, however, the cheaper price of illegal vapes makes them more attractive to anyone below the legal age.

There is a lot of confusion over the differences that can make a vape legal or illegal, safe or harmful. Chris Edwards, sales manager of the legal vape shop Connect 2 Vapes in Worcester helped to explain the specifics.

What makes a vape illegal?

Mr Edwards: "Any disposable vape that holds more than 600 puffs, or 2ml of liquid, is illegal."

Vapes containing spice and other illegal ingredients are also illegal.

According to research from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, one third of all vape products sold in the UK aren't compliant with regulations.

Can illegal vapes be dangerous?

Mr Edwards: "UK ingredients are food grade and have been tested and researched many times.

"Other countries such like America and Turkey are less regulated when it comes to vape juice and allow more harmful ingredients into their products.

"Some illegal disposables have been reported to have lead in them, which doesn't surprise us with how many fake brands there are roaming the streets."

Research performed in 2023 by online company Vape Superstore found that 83% of vape users are unaware of the health risks posed by vapes.

Any advice for vape users?

Mr Edwards: "My advice would be to use a respectable business that is transparent about their products, such as ourselves or any vape shop they deem fit, and buy a proper vape, one that is regulated and is much healthier and cost-efficient."

To help users check their purchases are legal, Vape Superstore suggests several tips to avoid buying counterfeit or illicit disposables:

  • Check for authenticity
  • Look for well-known brands
  • Be wary of unusually low prices
  • Ask the retailer to provide proof of TPD compliance (these are the regulations to ensure safety in the E-cigarette industry)
  • Stay informed with the latest regulations and guidelines.
