Approval has been given for a new Aldi supermarket and a 124-space car park in Pershore town centre.
Wychavon District Council approved the development at a Planning Committee meeting on Thursday, June 20, with buildings on King George's Way set to be demolished before construction on the 1,780 sqft supermarket development commences.
Ian Edwards, the council's director of economy and environment, said: "This is positive news for Pershore as it will create new jobs and boost choice for residents.
"It will attract people into the high street which will benefit other businesses."
Pershore Town Council believe Aldi will be a welcome addition to the town.
A spokesperson said: "Members of Pershore Town Council are excited for the impact this will have on the future of the High Street.
"It was vitally important to the town council that any new supermarket retailer was located in the town centre, rather than on the outskirts, helping to increase footfall into, and to support, other local traders.
"We want to thank Aldi for being so cooperative during the planning process."
Alongside local construction jobs being created, Aldi believes the store will create approximately 50 full-time jobs - with staff sourced from the local area.
On the approval, Aldi's Real Estate Director, Simon Glover, added: "We are delighted with the decision. We have had great support for this project and can’t wait to bring our offer to the people of Pershore.”
Aldi will occupy the former Pershore Market site, which closed at the end of 2023 after the owner had deemed that it was no longer viable.
The development project will feature a new pedestrian walkway between Pershore's High Street and King George's Way, alongside a number of green and low-carbon measures including capacity for 21 electric vehicle charging points on site.
We have been asked to point out that four businesses remain open at Market Gate and Billing House and continue to trade. They include Bubblicious, Cafe on the Corner, The Tool Den and Smart Cards.
