If you have ever considered fostering maybe now is the time to ask the question ‘What is stopping me taking the next step?’

Recently, in a feature published on this website, the team behind Happy Hearts Foster Care, outlined why they started Happy Hearts, and the continuing urgent need for foster cares.

One person who took that next step and decided just to ‘go for it’ is 27-year-old Abby, who contacted the Birmingham-based agency.

A mother of two with her third child due soon, Abby explained that while she did take some time to contact Happy Hearts, it has been a fulfilling experience, and she is now celebrating her first year as a Happy Hearts foster carer and is proud of what she has achieved and the impact she has made in just 12 months.

Said Abby: “I had always wanted to foster and to look after children, and I did a couple of months thinking over the next step. I did some research and found Happy Hearts which is local to me.

“In the end I decided to just go for it, and I’m so glad that I did.

“Happy Hearts got in touch, and they were ever so helpful and supportive, helping me along every step of the way.”

Taking the ‘next step’ is as simple as filling out this online contact form, which doesn’t commit you to anything other than finding out a bit more about becoming a foster carer and to have answered all those questions you will want to ask.

For Abby, fostering with Happy Hearts has, and continues to be, a rewarding experience, delivering Abby the perfect work/life balance.

In the 12 months Abby has been with Happy Hearts she has had a couple of children placed with her, but perhaps the most satisfying has been fostering a young mum and her new born baby, which resulted in such a positive outcome that the arrangement was extended from five to seven months on the recommendation of the young person’s social worker.

“Being a mother myself really helped, and she is now living independently,” said Abby, “but we talk every day."

Founded in 2021 by Rizwan Khan and Nayla Khan, to meet the needs of children and young people who require high quality foster placements, Happy Hearts is a small, independent, family run fostering service. There’s no aspect of fostering they are not familiar with or have not experienced themselves, which places Happy Hearts in the perfect position to advise prospective foster carers, while offering unwavering support to new and established carers.

“We would like to see more people like Abby come forward. We will always stand by our foster carers in all circumstances and provide thorough and continuous training and support,” said Nayla.

“We run a 24/7 support line, so help is just a phone call away. We also allocate a supervising social worker to each foster carer.

“Having been foster carers ourselves for many years, not only do we understand the requirements of foster carers, but we also genuinely value them. We appreciate the role of a foster carer and the changes they can bring to the lives of children and young people, making us the ideal fostering agency to offer advice, support, and guidance to new and experienced carers.”
