A HEADTEACHER from Worcester has been recognised as one of the best in England.

Sarah Hanson, headteacher of St Barnabas CofE Primary School in Merrimans Hill, Worcester, has been recognised for her work with a Silver Award in the Headteacher of the Year in a Primary School at the Pearson National Teaching Awards.

Mrs Hanson was presented with the award on Wednesday, June 19 in front of the school community, including teachers, children and parents at the end of the school’s sports day.

This latest award comes after St Barnabas was named primary school of the year in April.

Mrs Hanson had not been aware she had won the award until presented with it. Moments after finding out she had won, Mrs Hanson said: “I’m really shocked and excited, it’s amazing.

“I didn’t expect to win this at all and I had no idea this was going to happen today.

“It’s very exciting and very unexpected.”

June 19 marks National Thank a Teacher Day, a celebration of the education community and the importance of the educators in shaping the lives of young people.

Cathy Spence, a teacher at St Barnabas, was the person who nominated Mrs Hanson, said: “The staff team at St Barnabas are an incredible family of committed people who work at all levels with all of the children.

“It’s a massively inclusive and fantastic place to be and I think Mrs Hansen leads us and sets the bar for the whole school.

“She’s ambitious, she’s creative and she’s inspirational.”

Sharon Hague, managing director of School Assessment and Qualifications at Pearson UK, said: “We’re delighted to recognise this year’s Silver Award winners on their outstanding achievements.

“The contributions they make and the impact they have on young people’s lives every day is truly exceptional.

“Thank you for your continued work and congratulations!”

Of the thousands of nominees, Mrs Hanson will now be in the running for the Gold Award alongside a handful of other headteachers, with a ceremony later this year to award the winner.
