THE HEAD boy of a Worcester school has worn a skirt to class to protest against the 'unfair' uniform policy.

Nikita Tkachuk, who has just finished his GCSEs at Nunnery Wood High School, protested as he believes it is unfair that boys must wear long trousers during summer months.

He wanted the uniform to include tailored shorts but the school said it does not have plans to change its uniform policy at this time.

The 17-year-old, originally from Ukraine and now living in St Peter's, had the support of his classmates when he turned up in the school skirt.

His foster mum Maya Cockeram said: “He tried to do his very best and it is frustrating that it doesn’t sound like the policy will happen, but he tried his best.

“His classmates were very supportive, especially the girls, nobody made fun of him, he walked to school and was very comfortable.

“I am very proud, it’s not an easy thing to do, but he’s been incredible for two years especially being away from his family.

According to Nikita, the scorching heat during lunchtime made wearing long black polyester trousers 'unbearable.'

He said, unlike girls who could wear skirts above the knee, boys attending Nunnery Wood School are required to wear full-length trousers.

Nikita is originally from Ukraine but moved to the UK two years ago as a result of the outbreak of war in his homeland.

The youngster quickly settled into Worcester as part of the Homes For Ukraine scheme and became a popular member at Nunnery Wood following in his foster brother and sister's footsteps in becoming a head student.

Having finished his GCSE exams, he is now moving on to study at Worcester Sixth Form College in September.

His foster parents are Dr Steve Cockeram, a Green Party councillor for St Peter's, and Maya, who works as a special needs teaching assistant.

A school spokesperson said that, while it does consider and value students' views, there are currently no plans for changing any policies.

The spokesperson added: “Nikita was a fantastic student, we are very proud of him and wish him all the best in his future endeavours."

Mrs Cockeram said: "We are so proud of our foster son Nikita's bold move.

"Nikita decided to make a statement by wearing a skirt to school and we are really proud of his courage to speak out for what's right.

"His bold and courageous move has been applauded by his family in Ukraine and England."
