WORCESTERSHIRE may be hit by its first heatwave of the year next week, a little later than previous years.

While this spell of warm weather may not be as intense as the heatwave in June 2023, which caused Worcester City Council to activate an emergency protocol,  residents will experience abnormally warm temperatures.

In a statement, the Met Office said: “There is a warming trend as we go through the coming days and we are likely to reach heatwave threshold temperatures in southern and central England.

"Many places will remain mostly settled throughout next week, however, there remains uncertainty as to how long the higher temperatures will last."

The Met office has forecast temperatures to rise to 23 degrees C on Monday and continue to rise further into the week, with the official heatwave threshold in Worcestershire being 27 degrees C.

Popular attractions in Worcestershire are already preparing themselves for these temperatures and crowds that will follow.

The Lido, an open air, saltwater swimming pool in Droitwich Spa, is one of many locations that will be expected more visitors during the hotter weather: "We are already geared up for the warm weather. The only different, when it actually comes, is we try and make sure people aren't outside queueing in the sun for too long.

"We put out more parasols for sunshade, and encourage drinking water and using sun lotion, with posters around reception and changing rooms to encourage this."

When preparing for a heatwave, the red cross has several suggestions on how to keep safe, including:

  • Keep out of the heat during the hottest hours of the day
  • Keep covered and protected when in the sun
  • Stick to cold foods and drinks
  • Watch out for children and animals who are more vulnerable
