NEIGHBOURS were forced to evacuate their homes after a "scary" house fire caused over £100k worth of damage to two homes.

A "catastrophic" fire broke out between two properties on Peninsula Road in St Peter's, causing six fire engines to fill the residential street.

Three people were in one of the homes and one person was in the neighbouring property when the fire started in a shed.

Neighbours rushed to get hoses to battle the flames before fire crews arrived.

One eyewitness in Peninsula Road said seeing how fast it had developed was really scary.

They added: “The fire crews turned up in five or ten minutes.

“Two initially arrived and then there were about six.

“It was quite surprising how quickly it happened.

“We had to get out because of its closeness to the houses.

“Some neighbours, I think tried to put it out with a hose pipe, but it didn’t work.”

All people in the properties were accounted for and no one was injured.

Police and ambulance were informed but were not needed at the incident.
