Worcester’s museums have provided a boost to hotels in and the city, a council committee has heard.

The Joint Museums Committee, which is made up of members of both Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council, was given an update on the performance of the Commandery at its latest meeting on Wednesday (June 12).

“1,700 beds were filled through visitors to the Commandery, who then stayed on for two or three more nights,” said museums audiences manager Helen Large.

She also said 39 per cent of visitors to the Commandery, Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum, and Worcestershire County Museum at Hartlebury Castle, came to the county specifically to visit the museums.

The committee also heard that the Commandery has enjoyed success hosting events such as Worcester Mela and has seen its escape room surpass its income targets in its first full year of trading.

The Commandery’s new “retail welcome area” was also said to be “proving successful”.
