Local farms will be opening their gates this weekend for Open Farm Sunday.
The special event, held on June 9 this year, returns for its 18th year, and encourages people to visit their local farm to learn about what the farmers get up to every day and how they are run. Several farms in Worcestershire have opted to give locals a chance to look behind the scenes:
Churchfields Farm, WR9 0AH
This farm on the outskirts of Droitwich is highly popular among locals for its family attractions and café. However, it has a rich history going back over a century. Five generations of the family have lived and worked on there. Visitors will have the chance to see how the ice cream and salt that Churchfields has become known for is produced. Entry to the farm is free on Sunday.
Lower House, WR6 5DQ
Lower House is a diverse farm, producing dairy, beef and sheep-related products, as well as cereal crops to feed their animals. The farm has invited people to meet their cows, beef cattle, calves, ewes and lambs. Visitors can also see the robots used to milk the cows, before taking a trip around the farm. There will be the opportunity to purchase some of the produce made there, and a barbecue for lunch. Entry to the farm is free.
Wildgoose Rural Training, WR2 6LS
This isn’t your usual farm; Wildgoose Rural Training is a care farm and nature reserve that educates people on horticulture and animal conservation. The centre opened in 2000 and has been taking on students as a form of therapy. Visitors this weekend can take part in several experiences including animal encounters, wildlife tours and woodworking. Entry to the farm is free.
Bennetts Farms, WR2 4BS
Bennetts will be demonstrating how their dairy farm operates this weekend, with visitors given the chance to witness the process of milk production, from milking the cows to bottling for sale. Farmers will take people around on guided tours with an opportunity to sample some of Bennetts Ice Cream from the café. Entry to the farm is £6 for adults, and free for under 16s.
Wicton Farm, HR7 4LR
Wicton, located in Northeast Herefordshire, will be leading tours for visitors at 11am and 1pm, giving people the chance to meet their cows and explore the farm. As a Wild Cow farm, the cows are kept on a 100% grass-fed diet. Products like milk, milkshakes, and halloumi style cheese using the milk from the farm can be bought after the tour. Entry to the farm is free.
