Sainsbury’s in Blackpole has been given permission to install eco-friendly heating and refrigeration systems.
The supermarket chain is upgrading the equipment at a number of its stores as it looks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make the entire business carbon-neutral by 2035.
Plans submitted to Worcester City Council proposed replacing its existing plant machinery with three new air source heat pumps and a refrigeration pack.
These will sit on concrete plinths on the car park and will be installed alongside two gas coolers and a room from which all of the machinery can be monitored.
The plans have been approved subject to a number of conditions, including that Sainsbury’s must plant three trees at its Blackpole site within the next planting season.
