A MOTORWAY was closed over concern for the welfare of a teenager who was threatening to jump from the bridge but later brought to safety.

The M5 was closed in both directions following the incident at a bridge over the motorway near junction 6 last night.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "We received a call around 9.10pm yesterday evening (Thursday 6 June) with the concern for the welfare of a female on the M5 overpass at junction 6.

"Officers attended and assisted with taking the female to safety."

A ladder platform was used to get to the girl who was on a  bridge over the M5 at junction 6 near the A4440 Trotshill Way in Worcester and 'threatening to jump' shortly before 9pm last night.

Two Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews attended the scene – one each from Worcester and Droitwich Fire Stations.

A spokesperson for the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: "The aerial ladder platform from Worcester were called at 8.48pm on 6 June to assist police at the A4440 Trotshill Way, Worcester.

"A teenage girl was threatening to jump off a bridge and was handed over to the care of the police who attended along with the ambulance service. The incident was marked as pending closure at 12.25am."

During the height of the incident there were delays of at least 60 minutes above normal travel times.
