Pupils of two Worcester schools will perform the D-Day Poem in Cathedral Square to mark its 80th anniversary.

The event, set for Thursday (June 6) at 11am, will feature students of Tudor Grange Primary Academy and Tudor Grange Academy Worcester.

The co-directors of the recital are David Allen of Midland Actors Theatre, Fiona Roach of Tudor Grange Primary, and Gavin Coles of Tudor Grange Academy.

Mr Allen said: "We did not want to just do a straight reading of the poem.

"We have turned it into a dramatic event, with the children in costume, moving around the space and among the audience and passersby."

The poem, penned by Chelsea Pensioner Roy Palmer, will be echoed by schools nationwide at 11am on the day.

Festivities in Worcester will take place as a part of 'Spitfire over the Midlands', a two-year project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Midland Actors Theatre has been working with diverse groups from numerous schools, and looking at the pivotal role that the Spitfire had on people and communities.

In addition to the live performances, a short film compiling some of the work carried out by the participating pupils will be shown on the big screen in Cathedral Square on Saturday (June 8) from 10am to 4pm.
