A NEW Mexican restaurant has finally opened in the city centre - but "frustratingly" only for deliveries.

Worcester's newest restaurant, MEXI.co., has opened only for deliveries until Worcester City Council approves its outdoor signage.

Steve Weston, the owner, said his new business looks fabulous, but frustratingly, customers still cannot fully enjoy the cuisine the eatery offers.

The business, which is a street food joint, is waiting for Worcester City Council to approve its outdoor signs before welcoming customers through its doors.

"In one way, it looks fabulous, and in another way, it's frustrating as we cannot open it properly until the signs are in place," said Mr Weston.

"If you spend all that money in a place, you want all the signage, table and chairs when you open to make a proper impression in Worcester."

MEXI.co. took over the former Izzy's Ices & Donuts store, but Mr Weston said he did not realise that permission was needed to change the two signs over, which has led to the delay.

He said he looks forward to officially opening soon, but the opening date is still uncertain as it depends on the council's decisions.

The business first opened in Bromsgrove in 2015, but due to a new development, it decided to move from its home on Old Birmingham Road.

"We chose Worcester because we believe it is one of the few places still with a true High Street, and there are not many with that now.

"All our food is made fresh to order and everything is done by hand, making our flavours very intense.

"You can make combos and mix foods - you could eat here every day for months and not have the same dish as there are so many options.

"We are providing authentic food off the streets of Mexico."

Mr Weston said the business also incorporates American styles into Mexican food by offering a choice of honey-glazed and BBQ flavours.

MEXI.Co.'s temporary opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 5pm to 9pm, for deliveries only.

A Worcester City Council spokesperson said: “As the site is within a Conservation Area, the city council is required to carry out the necessary consultations.

"The deadline for comments on the application is June 14.

All representations will be considered when making the final decision.

"The target date for determining this type of application is eight weeks which would take us to July 5, but the council will make a decision on the application as soon as possible.”
