THE CITY'S outgoing MP has made a surprise election prediction after revealing that it is "pleasant" for him to sit this one out.
Robin Walker, who has been the Conservative MP for Worcester for the last 14 years, revealed he thinks this year will not be a traditional two horse race in the city with the Green Party possibly having a chance of winning the seat.
Rishi Sunak called a surprise general election for July 4 on Wednesday (May 22) meaning the campaign to become the city's next MP has begun with Mr Walker announcing he would be stepping down at the next election earlier this year.
He said: "After 14 years of one parliament, it is hard to say give us another chance, but then it may be closer than people think.
"Worcester has always been treated as a red or blue majority.
"I think this will be a three-way contest, and I will be supporting our candidate to win, but it is not going to be a traditional horse race."
Mr Walker was first elected in 2010 seeing off the city's previous Labour MP Michael Foster.
He added: "It is so strange - this is the first time since 1997 that I'm not campaigning in some way, and it is going to be strange.
"Right now, it's quite pleasant.
"I would like to say to all candidates that it is an incredible opportunity to pick up issues."
Mr Walker said he wanted to become a politician in a bid to make a difference rather than get involved in party politics, he said
He added his wife used to joke and say there is no point in being an MP if you are not going for Prime Minister, but added this has never been his goal.
Mr Walker said among his proudest achievements as MP was securing additional funding for schools, allocating funding for junior doctors in Worcester, Worcestershire Parkway, and the regeneration of Shrub Hill.
He hopes future candidates can continue his "legacy" and further help with funding provisions in sectors like education for SEND children.
"I genuinely have a massive sense of gratitude," he said.
"It has been an absolute privilege and the people of Worcester are brilliant.
"I have loved being MP for Worcester and I am so grateful for all the opportunities I have been given."
