AN EIGHT-year-old girl was taken to hospital after an XL Bully-type dog attacked her at a caravan park with the animal since seized by police.

And a shocked family member of the young girl said she had to pull her off the dog before 'throwing her over a fence to make sure she was safe'.

Officers said they were called to a property at The Haven in Holt Heath at around 9.25pm on Friday, May 17. 

Police arrived after a report a young girl had been bitten by a dog outside the premises, and the youngster was taken to hospital with injuries.

Ambulance staff said the injuries were not life-threatening, while the police added the eight-year-old's wounds were not life-changing.  

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said the dog had been seized by officers and enquiries into the incident were ongoing. 

The family of the girl have spoken of the shocking moment the dog attacked and claimed it was an XL Bully as the "owner had a certificate". 

A police spokesperson said they were unable to confirm the breed at this stage as a formal process with a qualified vet had to be followed. 

Ambulance staff were called at 9.10pm to deal with the incident.

An ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Midland Air Ambulance Critical Care Car attended the scene and found the child with injuries. 

She received treatment at the scene before being taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment.

A family member told the Worcester News the reported attack happened at a caravan site when they were visiting a friend and it was a neighbour's dog. 

She said: "I had to pull her off the dog and throw her over the fence to make sure she was safe.

“It was a real shock, it shook everyone up, to be honest.

“It was quite a deep tissue injury, she’s had to have it bandaged up and she’s needed stitches.

“It’s just a case of how long the recovery is going to take really, she will have quite a big scar but it will heal." 

The family member added the girl is out of hospital but has been off school.

“She’s not too bad and feeling ok within herself."
