Residents and councillors have expressed concern at plans for a McDonald’s and a Starbucks off the A4440 in Worcester.
Proposals have been put forward to build a restaurant and a coffee shop - both with drive-thrus - near the roundabout where Plantation Drive meets Trotshill Way and Parsonage Way.
The application site itself is on undeveloped land known as Sixways Park, just east of the A4440 in Roundhouse Way.
Plans submitted to Worcester City Council by developers Canmoor show that the existing access to Roundhouse Way would be used to access the site.
Both the McDonald’s and the Starbucks would have a drive-thru, with order, pay and collection windows and routes wrapping around the buildings.
The site would include 67 parking spaces including 12 electric vehicle charging spaces, six disabled spaces and three motorcycle spaces.
There would be cycle parking for 12 bikes and external seating areas close to both buildings.
Cllr Stephen Hodgson said he has “serious concerns” about the proposal and expects strong representation from both Warndon Parish Council and residents.
“The [street] lighting was designed to cater for the rare lesser horseshoe bats, and Plantation Drive had the first ‘bat friendly’ lights in the UK installed,” he said.
“We have serious anti-social behaviour from boy racers on the A4440 and this is likely to make matters worse.”
Neighbour Aaron Jones said more fast food outlets on the dual carriageway would encourage boy racers to “meet here and be a nuisance to the local community.”
Colin Goldfinch raised concerns about the potential for increased litter on a site that is close to Warndon Woodland Nature Reserve.
Diana Rawlings questioned whether the development would cause further traffic congestion, which could impact on access to and from Worcestershire Royal Hospital at key times.
David Brealey said: “The intended development is less than five minutes from another fast food outlet that already has a drive-thru facility.
“This development adds nothing for the local community.”
He added: “I believe the added after-dark activity in this area will significantly impact the ability of the bats to journey across the road.”
