In celebration of World Book Night, 350 copies of a Kit de Waal book were gifted to vulnerable children.

Worcestershire County Council's Library Service distributed de Waal's books, entitled 'Without Warning and Only Sometimes' to locations across the county in an effort to encourage reading in those who may not always have access to books.

Several locations and organisations were involved, including refugee community groups, Cranstoun, Action for Children, and Redditch Nightstop.

Hannah Perrott, assistant director for communities at the county council, said: "Books have the power to transform lives, and we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of reading.

"By distributing these books to people who have more limited access to books, we hope to inspire a love for reading."

The books were given out as part of Worcestershire Libraries' commitment to promote literacy and a love for reading, with recipients encouraged to participate in the #ReadingHour at 7pm on the day (Tuesday, April 23) to join the nationwide celebration of reading.

World Book Night is an initiative where the library service works with The Reading Agency, a leading UK charity that promotes the importance of reading for pleasure, providing engaging and enjoyable books to those who may face barriers to reading.

The initiative aims to help people such as refugees and immigrants who are building a new life, and English language learners who are looking to improve their language skills through reading.
