Over £300,000 has been secured for a new mobile library eBus in Worcestershire.

Worcestershire County Council has received the grant, which will be used to replace an existing library van with a modern, electric alternative.

The fund comes as a relief for rural and isolated residents of the county, who rely on the mobile library service.

One mobile customer said: "Over the years, the mobile library service has added to the sense of community in rural areas as well as providing a social function for the community."

Another expressed the importance of the service to their wellbeing, saying: "I can go weeks without seeing or speaking to anyone, so this is essential for my mental health."

As well as providing the library's diverse selection of books, the new eBus will pave the way for a new library outreach scheme across the county.

The programme will include school visits, in efforts to foster a love for reading in children and to host digital skills support sessions, along with services promoting health and wellbeing.

Hannah Perrott, assistant director for communities at the county council, said: "We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will enable us to modernise our mobile library service and better serve the diverse needs of Worcestershire communities through innovative outreach initiatives."

The funding was secured through the Libraries Improvement Fund (LIF), managed by Arts Council England.
