A ZEBRA crossing will be installed near a school where a boy was knocked down by a car to the relief of parents and councillors who lobbied for it in the hope no other child would be hurt.
A six-year-old boy was knocked down in Stanley Road, outside Stanley Road Primary School, last November in an incident which shocked the community.
The boy was struck by a car on Friday, November 24 last year. He is since understood to have made a full recovery but the incident prompted urgent calls for safety to be improved, including a safety rally.
Now after lobbying by parents and Cathedral ward Labour councillors Lynn Denham, Jabbar Riaz and Atif Sadiq, a zebra crossing is to be installed nearby at Wyld's Lane this summer.
The move was welcomed by parents of children who attend Stanley Road Primary, including Lucy Kurylak who said: "That's really good news. We finally got listened to."
Mum-of-two Katie McClenaghan of Dent Close, Worcester, described the decision to install the crossing as 'wonderful news'.
Cllr Denham, joint leader of Worcester City Council and a county councillor, said: "That will enable a lot of children and families to safely cross Wyld's Lane. I have agreed to put some of my funding towards the technical assessment. It is absolutely brilliant news.
"It is just around the corner from Stanley Road school. It would be a crossing just down from the mini roundabout. We have been lobbying the county council for some time to make improvements to road safety, particularly for children at school time.
"It is really sad to see that it has taken the recent accident to demonstrate to the Highways authority just how important and urgent it is to have a safe crossing."

Criticism was previously levelled at Worcestershire County Council by Cllr Denham over the scrapping of the Stanley Road crossing patrol.
The previous school crossing patrol site on Stanley Road junction with Wyld's Lane had been continually reassessed since 2021 and had not met the national criteria for a school crossing patrol, a county council spokesperson confirmed.
A spokesperson from Worcestershire County Council said: “Worcestershire County Council is planning to install a new zebra crossing on Wyld’s Lane, Worcester, and we are expecting to undertake the construction in late summer 2024.”
