The area was densely packed with low-quality housing, much of which was demolished in around 1930.

The street had been taken over by a bus station and car parking by 1965 and most remaining older houses in 1977 were used mostly as small shops.
The bus station switched to the new Crowngate Centre nearby in the 1990s and a flat complex (left) was built.
The empty former Fine Pine furniture shop (right) is set to be knocked down to make way for more apartments.
