NEW 'bright' lighting at a crossing where a woman was seriously injured after she was knocked down by a car has been welcomed but is no substitute for a proper pelican crossing says a city councillor.
A woman in her 40s was knocked down at the zebra crossing in Windermere Drive in Warndon in Worcester - and now new lighting has been installed at the crossing where the incident happened.
We have previously reported how the woman was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham after suffering life-threatening injuries on Wednesday, February 7.
The result was a petition, led by Labour councillors, for a button-operated pelican crossing at the spot where the woman was struck by a beige Nissan Figaro during the incident at 5.20pm.
Cllr Jill Desayrah, the Labour councillor for Warndon, had been calling for a pelican crossing at the same spot for a year before the incident and was among those to hand in the 200 signature petition to Highway bosses at County Hall last Thursday.
Cllr Desayrah said: “These new, bright lights give much better illumination at the crossing, which had been very dark at night.
"But I hope this is just one part of an ongoing process to improve safety here, because many cars speed through this crossing in the daytime.
"The petition specifically called for a Pelican crossing and additional safety measures to slow down approaching traffic. In my opinion, these are still required. Hopefully both of these things are being considered at county council and this is not the end of the story.”

Cllr Desayrah has previously said poor lighting was one of the issue affecting the crossing.
Edward Kimberley, a Labour candidate for Warndon, said: "I hope (but do not know) that this is only the first stage in a larger plan from the county council.
"It is frustrating that there has been zero communication from the county council since we presented our petition. It would be a great comfort if we had confirmation that there is more work to come, and that this is not all they intend to do."
West Mercia Police has been approached for an update on the case. The last update we had the injured woman was described as being in a stable condition. No arrests had been made.
A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “We can confirm that the street lighting in the vicinity of the crossing has recently been upgraded to LED lighting. Discussions are ongoing regarding the existing crossing and further improvements to the site."
