TWELVE people were involved in a four-car crash on the M5 as one injured woman trapped inside her vehicle had to be freed by firefighters.
The incident happened on the M5 northbound between junctions 7 (Worcester South) and 6 (Worcester) at around 2.30pm on Friday (March 15).
The M5 was closed northbound between those junctions due to the multi-vehicle collision with motorists diverted onto the A4440.
Drivers faced delays of an hour even when the motorway reopened later that afternoon. The fire service said four cars were involved, and police and ambulance said three cars.
A spokesperson for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "One ambulance and a paramedic officer are currently in attendance.
"Upon arrival we found a woman who was the driver of a car. She was extricated from the vehicle by the fire service.
"Once extricated, she was assessed and had sustained injuries not believed to be life-threatening. She received treatment at the scene before being conveyed to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment.”
A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said it sent two crews - one from Worcester and one from Droitwich Fire Stations.
"[They] were called at 2.30pm on March 15 to a road traffic collision on the M5 Northbound between junctions 7 and 6.
"The incident involves four cars and 12 casualties, one of whom is medically trapped, with the other 11 in the care of paramedics.
"Police, ambulance and Highways are all in attendance with the motorway closed northbound."
An eyewitness said: "I saw two ambulances going down the southbound carriageway's hard shoulder with blue lights and sirens sounding. A while later a police van headed the other way up the otherwise deserted northbound carriageway from the crash scene."

"Officers arrived at the collision to find three vehicles involved."
