A SHOPPER was "shocked" to find a huge locust in his supermarket shop.
Lee Westacott found the bug inside his fridge door after unloading his haul from the Aldi supermarket in Droitwich.
The 39-year-old, who lives in the town, believes the locust was lurking in the bag of celery he bought and made its escape after the bag had been opened.
"I was cutting some beef and got the celery out," said the cable jointer from Droitwich.
"I can only think it came out of the celery bag and got stuck in the fridge.
"I was a bit shocked at first, but my son was amazed with it."
Mr Westac said the locust was huge and he now keeps it in a bag in his kitchen.
He added: "It was probably about three inches - it's quite a big bug.
"It's like a jacked-up grasshopper.
"It's now in a bag in the kitchen.
"We bought some celery and some other bits of veg so I'm guessing it's come out of one of those packets.
"I have contacted [Aldi] and they've sent me an email back saying they'll give me a £5 goodwill voucher to use for a future shop.
"Initially, I didn't know if it had been all over the food in the fridge.
"Aldi said what I could do was take the pack of celery back to them and they'd refund the bag but I'm probably going to throw most of it away."
A spokesperson for Aldi has apologised to Mr Westacott and said rare finds like this can occasionally occur.
"While it has not been possible to establish whether this insect came from an Aldi product, such a rare finding can occasionally occur with products that are grown in natural conditions," it said.
"We have apologised to Mr Westacott and would encourage him to return the packaging of any opened fresh produce to his nearest store for a full refund."
