A WOMAN hit by a car is now in a ‘stable condition’ as an urgent petition calling for a crossing at the spot where she was knocked down is due to be handed over to highways bosses very soon.
The woman in her 40s was knocked down in Windermere Drive in Warndon, Worcester, at the zebra crossing near Sainsbury’s Blackpole on Wednesday, February 7.
But the petition provides 'chilling' accounts of other near misses on Windermere Drive while official figures from police show this incident is not the first.
On Windermere Drive, near the Sainsbury's mini-roundabout, there have been three injury collisions since 2019 - two slight injury collisions and one serious injury collision - which does not include the recent collision.
The recent incident happened at around 5.20pm when a beige Nissan Figaro travelling from Blackpole towards Sainsbury's collided with a woman crossing the road at the zebra crossing. Her dog was also hurt in the incident.
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said on Wednesday: “The woman is still in hospital, is now stable with serious injuries. The driver has helped officers with enquiries and investigations continue.”
Cllr Jill Desayrah, Warndon’s Labour councillor, had been calling for a button-operated pelican crossing for months. Now a petition to add further impetus (and now containing more than 200 signatures) is due to be handed into the Highways department of Worcestershire County Council on Thursday, March 14.
She said: “For many months people have complained and worried about the safety of the zebra crossing on Windermere Drive in Warndon, but until now they have not been listened to. This petition clearly demonstrates the strength and depth of feeling.

“People have used the opportunity to relate first hand near-miss experiences. The number and frequency of these chilling stories puts beyond doubt the need for things be improved as soon as possible. We are looking to present this information to the Highways department of Worcestershire County Council next Thursday March 14. I sincerely hope the members responsible for delivering the necessary changes will take the trouble to read and digest it. And then take action at last.”
Edward Kimberley, one of this year's city council candidates for Warndon and Elbury Park, said: "Before our petition closed last night we had reached over 200 signatures, and we could not be more grateful for the volume of support we've had.
"We feel this makes the point very clear - residents have good reason to want this road crossing changed. We will be presenting this to the county council very soon."
