The fire service has urged people to make testing their smoke alarms a part of their routine.

As part of the Fire Kills campaign, Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) stressed the importance of alarms, which can provide the critical extra seconds needed to escape a fire.

HWFRS has warned that many homeowners are unaware that the average lifespan of a smoke alarm is only 10 years.

It says that a weekly test could make all the difference, coupled with ensuring there's at least one smoke alarm on every level of the home.

Changing batteries every year, never removing them, and checking the fitting spaces are also part of the advice.

Emma Roberts, head of prevention for HWFRS said: "Smoke alarms can offer vital protection for you and your loved ones, but most people simply fit and forget – they don’t know if it might be coming to the end of its lifespan or not working at all.

“So, if your alarm is getting past its best or your top floor is missing an alarm of its own, fit new ones, test them at least once a week and protect your loved ones.”
