Three students from a Pershore school have been selected to represent the Midlands at the world's biggest football tournament.

Bowbrook House School's Tom Grant, Theo Mills and Myles Lynch have been chosen to represent Midlands Independent Schools Football Team at the Gothia Youth World Cup competition in Gothenburg, Sweden this summer.

The competition, which annually takes place in July, draws in teams of boys and girls aged 11-18 from around the globe, and is considered the world's largest football tournament in terms of competing teams, with as many as 1,730 teams from 82 nations participating in previous editions.

Noteworthy former players that have graced the pitches of the competition include the likes of Alan Shearer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Xabi Alonso, Emmanuel Adebayor and Andrea Pirlo.

In the past the tournament, which is said to take over Gothenburg, consisted of 4,349 games, which were played on 110 fields and attracted 300,000 visitors to its center in Heden.

Tom, Theo and Myles, who all play for nearby club Drakes Broughton, were among 300 students who attended trials to play at the competition in 2023.

They are all now training with their fellow team members, and are said to be excited for the opportunity to potentially follow in the footsteps of some football legends.

Co-ordinator of PE and Games at Bowbrook House, James Swain, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for the players selected and an incredible opportunity for them to showcase their footballing skills on a global stage.

"All of us at Bowbrook House wish them the best of luck in the tournament and we look forward to hearing all about their ‘once in a lifetime’ experience."
