AN urgent petition for a pelican crossing where a woman was knocked down by a car could be handed in within the next fortnight as campaigners take the fight to highways chiefs.

So far 150 people have signed the petition calling for a pelican crossing in Windermere Drive in Blackpole, Worcester after the woman was knocked down at a zebra crossing.

Organisers say the petition, calling for the button-operated crossing, could be handed into Worcestershire County Council, the Highways authority, within the next fortnight although final details have yet to be confirmed.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was knocked down by a car while crossing the road at the zebra crossing in Windermere Drive in Blackpole in Worcester at around 5.20pm on Wednesday, February 7.

The latest update from West Mercia Police is that 'enquiries are ongoing'. We have previously reported that nobody has been arrested or charged in connection with the incident.

The pedestrian was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with life-threatening injuries. The Worcester News understands her condition remains largely unchanged.

The scene was taped off by police in the aftermath of the crash and a Nissan Figaro, understood to be the vehicle involved, was pictured near the zebra crossing.

On Windermere Drive, near the Sainsbury's mini-roundabout, there have been three injury collisions since 2019 - two slight injury collisions and one serious injury collision - which does not include the collision earlier this week.

Jill Desayrah, the Labour city councillor for Warndon, has been calling for a pelican crossing to replace the existing zebra crossing since last February and a petition has now been set up to gauge public support for the suggestion.

Cllr Desayrah said in a previous statement: "Every day since I learned of Wednesday’s accident the victim has been on my mind. My hopes for her full recovery remain but I’m also very concerned that no more accidents happen here.

"This isn't the first time someone's life has been put in danger or lost because of inadequate road safety measures on this stretch of Windermere Drive.

"That's why we've launched this petition, to help County Council understand the strength of local feeling and push them to meet their responsibilities to the residents of Warndon."

Police are appealing for witnesses following the collision which happened when a beige Nissan Figaro travelling from Blackpole towards Sainsbury's on Windermere Drive collided with a woman crossing the road.

Officers investigating the collision would like to speak to anybody who saw the incident or anybody with dash cam footage from around the time it happened.
