NOBODY has been arrested or charged six months after a car ploughed into six pedestrians and killed an elderly woman.

It is now more than six months since a red Fiat 500 ploughed into six pedestrians on the pavement of Church Street in Malvern shortly after midday on Tuesday, August 8.

However, no arrests have been made or charges brought in the wake of the incident which is still being investigated by West Mercia Police.  Meanwhile, those campaigning to make the road safer await the formal conclusion of the official probe into the woman's death.

A spokesperson for the force said there were no updates at the moment.

She added: "There have been no arrests or charges and the investigation is ongoing."

A woman, in her 80s, who was taken to hospital, died from her injuries. Two of the victims were admitted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and was helping with enquiries into the cause of the collision.

Meanwhile, the independent county councillor Beverley Nielsen for Malvern Langland said she still hoped to explore the possibility of traffic calming measures and other measures to make Church Street 'a more positive pedestrian, resident and visitor experience'.

She added: "I'm still waiting for the full results of the police investigation to assist us with our planning."

Sergeant Liam Bennet, who is leading the investigation, said at the time: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the lady who has died.

“We’re working hard to understand what happened and how the car came to mount the pavement and strike the pedestrians.  While our investigation continues I would ask people to avoid speculating about what happened.”

Laura Monk who works at Parsons Bakery in Church Street described hearing a thump and saw the aftermath of the crash.

"I thought something had fallen over and I came running out. There was an old lady lying here on the pavement, one of our customers who is 88," she said.

The car had knocked over the boards outside Get Connected (the mobile phone shop) and hit the boards outside the bakery. She described how an off-duty nurse from Oxford, who was on holiday in Malvern, helped the casualties and said a colleague held a woman's hand after she had been injured.

Cllr Nielsen described what happened as 'a terrible tragedy' and had been lobbying for a 20mph speed limit 'at the very least' on town roads including Church Street, Victoria Road, Albert Road North, Abbey Road and Worcester Road.

Anyone who saw the collision or may have dash-cam footage of it is asked to contact Sgt Liam Bennett on liam.bennett@westmercia.police.uk quoting incident number 189i of 8 August.
