A TRAUMATISED delivery driver has been left unable to work after being punched by a man with a knife while he was delivering fast food.
Showkat Sultan said he is now reluctant to go back to work delivering for Uber Eats fearing a repeat attack and adding "I never thought this could happen in Worcester".
The 36-year-old took on the delivery on Saturday night (February 17) collecting food from McDonald's.
Mr Sultan went to an address given by the customer but after not providing full details there was a mix-up, eventually establishing with them the delivery was to an address in St Paul's Street.
He claims the customer racially abused him on the phone and did not answer the door when the driver had the food ready for him just before 11pm.
"I came outside, suddenly I realised somebody was shouting behind me," Mr Sultan said.
"A man was running towards me, he was aggressive.
"I was about to open the bag with the McDonald's in then I noticed in his left hand he had a knife.
"As soon as I saw that in my mind I was thinking 'is he going to stab me?'."
Mr Sultan said the man grabbed his collar and began landing punches to his head and a forceful punch to the left side of his face knocking his glasses off.
Mr Sultan said the power of the final punch knocked him onto the bonnet of a nearby car before he managed to get away from the man.
The victim, whose picture we have blurred as he fears reprisals, said throughout the man had been using racist comments about him being Indian.
Mr Sultan's wife was with him in the car waiting at the time, calling the police who attended and took him to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
The victim said: "Doctors have advised a period of rest due to the head punches, but I rely on the income.
"I lost my job last November and started this - I just want to do my job to pay my bills and rent.
"I'm heavily traumatised by this, I'm worried I will bump into him. I live in the city centre not far from where the attack happened. It's a small city.
"I can't go out and get groceries, I'm not sure if I can go back to do deliveries again.
"I never thought this would happen in Worcester - maybe Birmingham or London where the crime rate is high. It is a shock."
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "We received a call around 11pm on Saturday evening with a report of an assault outside a property on St Pauls Street in Worcester.
"Officers attended. No arrests have been made and an investigation is now on-going."
Uber Eats was contacted for comment.
