AN "inspiration" and "real asset to the world of teaching" has been nominated in the Worcestershire Education Awards 2024.

One parent put forward Martin White, Bowbrook House School's head of English, for the teacher/lecturer of the year accolade after he transformed her daughter's academic life and self-belief.

The Canadian-born 53-year-old has been at the Peopleton school since 2013 following a move from Kidderminster's King Charles I School.

Martin, who is based in St John's after previously completing his teaching studies nearby at university in Worcester, said of his nomination: "I thought someone was winding me up at first.

"It's lovely to be appreciated in that way and it's very kind of the mother to do this. Her daughter worked incredibly hard and is an absolute star."

The parent said: "My daughter arrived at Bowbrook in year nine with no confidence as to her academic abilities.

"Not only does she have dyslexia but she had attended a comprehensive school with very poor pastoral care.

"She was particularly downhearted about English. She didn't think she would even pass her English GCSE and worried about it.

"Mr White turned everything around for her and she achieved an 8 in English literature and a 9 in English language (the top two grades). She still can't believe it.

"He did everything - and more - a teacher should do. He made the subject engaging and fun but, more than that, he made her believe in herself and want to do well.

"She worked so hard on her English and loved those lessons. The difference he made had a ripple effect across other subjects too and her whole approach to learning and her belief in herself.

"He role-modelled kindness and inspiration and is a real asset to the world of teaching."

Culminating in a glitzy black-tie dinner, the awards seek to reward members of the teaching and education sector for their hard work both in the classroom and behind the scenes.

The awards are organised by Newsquest, publishers of the Worcester News, Malvern Gazette, Evesham Journal, Bromsgrove & Droitwich Advertiser, Redditch Advertiser and Kidderminster Shuttle.

This prestigious scheme recognises the achievements, passion and dedication of those involved in all kinds of education – from nurseries to primary and secondary schools as well as colleges and training schemes.

It is quick to nominate at https://www.worcesternews.co.uk/worcestershireeducationawards/ by the closing date of February 11.
