A CHIP shop owner who was shocked to receive a one-star rating says he's delighted it has now been given the top rating just weeks later.

Newtown Takeaway owner Zac Ahmed said:  "We are happy to correct the mistakes now and to get the five star, and move forward."

Mr Ahmed was "gobsmacked" when the chippy was hit with the one-star rating- the second lowest the Food Standards Agency (FSA) gives out - following an inspection in November.

At the time the FSA said major improvement was necessary to manage food safety, such as systems or checks being in place to ensure food sold or served was safe to eat.

But in good news for the takeaway the owners organised a reinspection which took place on January 18, with inspectors giving them a five-star rating.

Mr Ahmed said: "We were shocked, but customers have been patient with us.

"We were always clean when we opened.

"It is a learning curve, we made mistakes and the one star was down to the paperwork.

"We are pleased that has now been rectified."

In the FSA report the inspectors rated management of food safety as good.

The hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage as well as cleanliness and condition of facilities and building were also both rated good.

When the new Newtown Takeaway opened last October, it was a roaring success with chip lovers flocking to the takeaway.

Newtown Takeaway opened at the site of the old Newtown Fryer, in Ronkswood Hill, which closed a year ago blaming "accidental damage to the shop".

A notice on the Newtown Fryer website and on the FoodHub website apologised at the time for any inconvenience.

Mr Ahmed said he also owns Pickersleigh's Takeaway and Diner and Malvern Link Fish Bar in Malvern - both of those having high hygiene ratings on the Food Standards Agency's website.
