MORE than 12,000 crimes were recorded in Worcester in 2023 by police. 

Latest figures released by West Mercia Police show there was a drop in crime at the end of the year.

The new figures show that in the latest month of data for December there were 962 crimes. 

In comparison, in the month before, there were 987 crimes. 

Both those figures are down on the most crime-hit month of the year, October, when there were 1,159 crimes recorded in Worcester. 

The data reveals the types of crime reported as well as their location.

The figures for the rest of 2023 showed there were: 

 

  • 1,113 crimes in September
  • 1,158 crimes in August
  • 1,115 crimes in July
  • 1,025 crimes in June
  • 1,069 crimes in May
  • 1,050 crimes in April
  • 998 crimes in March
  • 1,008 crimes in February
  • 1,147 crimes in January

 

This means in 2023 West Mercia Police recorded a total of 12,791 crimes in the city. 

The most common crime type in December was violence and sexual assault which accounted for 367 of the crimes.

The second most common type that month was anti-social behaviour with 137 crimes.

And the third most common type in December was shoplifting with 109 crimes. 

In comparison to the month prior, in November, the most common crime type was also violence and sexual assault with 339 crimes. 

That month the second most common crime type was anti-social behaviour with 169 crimes, while the third most prevalent crime type that month was criminal damage and arson when there were 90 crimes.

Throughout 2023 the most common crime type was violence and sexual assault in total there being 4,233 reported to police.
