A BUSY road needs a zebra crossing to keep school children safe said a councillor who remembers being knocked down by a car and hurt herself as a child.
Cllr Jill Desayrah, who represents Warndon, is calling for the crossing to be installed in Tetbury Drive in Warndon, Worcester to make the estate safer for school children.
The Labour councillor was knocked down by a car when she walked to school as a child aged 10 so she said she understands the impact, describing it as 'something I have never forgotten'.
The impact threw her across the road and she says she was fortunate not to be thrown into the path of oncoming traffic, attending hospital outpatients for her injuries.
She said: “I am worried about anyone crossing this road at busy times of day.
"Based on my own experience I am frightened for pupils walking unaccompanied and have requested a crossing to service the school, before an accident happens.
"Thankfully, I understand that the county council is looking into my request and I hope they come to the right conclusion and agree to address the risk before someone gets hurt.”
She is particularly concerned because lines of sight near the school are 'very poor' during school drop-off and pick-up times.
She said: "Road safety on Tetbury Drive in Warndon has been a longstanding problem.
"The road is used as a cut-through to get off Cotswold Way and during rush hours there is heavy traffic and speeding.

"Where this is of particular concern is around Cranham Primary School. Recent trials of walking buses, where parents congregate and walk together to school, have uncovered fresh worries about the safety of children crossing the narrow busy road. "
Cllr Jill Desayrah has asked Worcestershire County Council to install a zebra crossing opposite the school entrance and other traffic calming measures to reduce the possibility of an accident.
A spokesperson for Cranham Primary School said they did not want to comment at this stage.
A spokesperson from Worcestershire County Council said: “We are aware of residents’ concerns in this area and the local County Councillor, James Stanley, is working with officers to see if there is anything further we can do to improve the situation”.
