A RISE in robberies and assaults has been seen across Worcester.

Police have spoken out after reports of "gangs of youths" attacking members of the public in the city.

Officers said they are aware of a small number of personal robberies and assaults which have been reported to them in recent weeks.

They will increase plain clothes patrols throughout the festive period to tackle the spate.

Chief Inspector Brian Gibbs said: "We're aware of a very small number of personal robberies and assaults which have been reported to us in recent weeks.  Enquiries are ongoing into these incidents.

"Patrols with both uniformed and plainclothes officers will continue over the festive period and, as always, I'd urge anyone with any information or concerns to get in touch with us."

Worcester City Amateur Boxing Club has been raising awareness on the spate of crime and has urged anyone concerned to come to the gym.

Shaun Finn, owner, said: "This is totally unacceptable and extremely cowardly.

"To the victims, again you are more than welcome to come to the gym and learn how to box.

"One thing in boxing is it doesn't stand for bullying."
