Popular Radio Wyvern presenter Julian Wharam is set to return to the Worcester airwaves after a five-month battle with a rare form of eye cancer.
The broadcaster and high school assistant principal has spoken about his treatment and recovery for the first time with Radio Wyvern programme director Paul Ellery.
Julian faced months of specialist treatment after presenting with symptoms which rendered him partially sighted and unable to continue working at the station, at high school Earl Mortimer College in Leominster and recording his regular podcast.
But he will soon be back on the airwaves at Wyvern and teaching geography to his students.
Julian, who also hosted the Worcester News Education Awards earlier this year, said: “I owe a debt of gratitude to the immensely talented NHS teams in Worcester, Kidderminster, Bromsgrove and Liverpool.
"Their care and astonishing expertise means that I am facing the New Year with a huge sense of hope."
Describing his treatment, Julian said: “The team in Liverpool asked me to imagine a 25-metre version of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland (which is 27km by comparison).
"They sat me in front of it and fired protons into my head at the speed of light, to work their magic!”
Speaking to Paul Ellery about returning to the airwaves at Worcester's Radio Wyvern, Julian said: “I’m fine and didn’t want to make a fuss about it."
Julian, who has been a broadcaster for more than 30 years and a high school teacher for more than 20, also said that he feels self-conscious about re-learning how to do everyday things with reduced visibility.
“The incredible support of my family, friends, colleagues, students and supporters at MacMillan has been profoundly moving, and is something that I would hope everyone in more challenging situations than my own may count upon," he added.
