Worcester Trading Standards have given residents some tips to ensure they shop smart and stay safe during last-minute Christmas shopping and the January sales.
With the festive season being a peak time for retail, residents are being advised about potential hazards like internet shopping scams and counterfeit goods.
Councillor Marcus Hart, cabinet member for communities, said: "It’s important for us to remind residents of the potential risks to look out for and of their consumer rights this Christmas when buying those important Christmas gifts, and as we look ahead to the January Sales.
"If residents have any concerns about any item they have bought or received and would like some advice on their consumer rights, they should call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 11 33."
Among the advice issued are precautions for online shopping, like researching the website, checking for a UK-based geographical address and phone number, and looking for secure payment symbols.
Parcel delivery scams were the most widely reported in 2023, so residents are advised not to provide card details or information on receiving suspicious postcards or phone calls.
Another red flag to look out for is counterfeit goods from car boot sales, social media sites, and other internet platforms.
These goods, while cheaper, are often inferior, potentially dangerous, and could result in harm.
When it comes to gift returns, it’s important to note that only the person who purchased the item can return it, and shops are only obligated to offer refunds if items are not as described or below satisfactory quality.
Worcester Trading Standards added: "As for refunds from brick-and-mortar stores, the onus falls on the seller to prove the goods weren't faulty for the first 30 days after purchase.
"Following this period, the burden of proof then falls to the consumer."
For online purchases, however, items can be returned up to 14 days after delivery unless they were custom-made to specifications.
It’s recommended to return any faulty items quickly, with proof of purchase for a hassle-free experience.
With these tips in hand, the residents of Worcestershire are expected to navigate the festive rush safely and effectively.
