A Worcester man says he came just seconds from death when a huge tree fell in front of his car in Droitwich.

Glen Dipple was driving along Pulley Lane at about 8.50am today (Sunday, December 10) when the tree came down.

“I keep going over it in my mind,” he said. “A couple of seconds later and it would have been on top of me.

“It’s just around a blind bend and as I came around, I saw it hit the ground. Another second and I would have been killed - I was quite shook up at the time, I was that close to death.”

Mr Dipple, 72, had been on his way to see his grandson Reuben, who was celebrating his first birthday.

“He’s my world,” said Mr Dipple. “After the tree came down, I called the police but they didn’t want to know - maybe they just don’t have the resources.

“I found a couple of old road signs and blocked off the road, because people were coming around the blind bend and almost having crashes themselves.

“A young lady stopped and comforted me, then she stopped the traffic - she was brilliant.

“My son only lives a couple of minutes away so he walked along Pulley Lane and stopped traffic on the other side of the tree.

“It is a huge tree and I should think it will take a couple of days to clear it. The circumference of the base of it is about six feet and it took down some telephone lines when it went.

“The council have been out now and closed the road.”

There were reports of other trees blocking roads around the county on Sunday following strong winds on Saturday.

The Met Office had issued a yellow warning for wind as gusts of 40mph hit Worcestershire.

Another tree came down near the entrance to Abberley Hall school on the A443 and there were also roads closed across Worcestershire because of flooding and car crashes.
