THERE was a big turnout for the Droitwich Spa Christmas light switch-on event.

Droitwich Town Council and community groups took part in the event which also marked the 400th baptism anniversary of John Hemminge.

Fairground rides, a Santa's grotto, dance performances, a John Hemminge tribute and choir singing formed part of the annual festive event which took place on Saturday night (November 25).

John Hemminge, who was baptised in the town, was a great friend of Shakespeare and after moving to London became an actor-manager of The King’s Men.

Cllr Fellows said: "The Christmas light switch on went very well with lots of entertainment such as LED light ladies on stilts which the children were totally in awe of.

"The Lions Club provided Santa for our community with lots of goodies, we had a reading from Shakespeare as we had unveiled a plaque earlier honouring John Heminge.

"The fair was very popular as always.

"We also had very young children doing some fantastic dance routines followed by the older ones dancing to modern music.

"All this was concluded with sing-along Christmas carols from our choir.

"We have had a lot of positive feedback so we are all really happy."

Councillor Richard Morris added: "The event was terrific and there was a great turnout."
