A 30ft Christmas tree has gone up in the city centre as Worcester prepares for its lights switch-on.

The tree was installed today (Thursday, November 16) on the Cathedral Square roundabout.

A lane in College Street was closed for the morning as a crane lifted the tree, which is a 30ft Norwegian Spuce, into place.

A 36ft Norwegian Spruce is also being installed at the New Street/St John’s roundabout. Both trees have been supplied by Real Christmas Trees Ltd of Solihull.

Worcester City Council said two 13ft Norway Spruces will be installed outside the Guildhall, a 12ft Nordman Fir is heading to Gheluvelt Park and a 20ft Nordman Fir will be installed in St Andrew’s Gardens for St Richard’s Hospice’s Lights of Love.

These trees are being supplied by Leigh Sinton Farm and Nurseries.

Festive lights have already been put up around Cathedral Square and the rest of the city centre ahead of Worcester’s lights switch-on event, which takes place on Saturday, November 25.

The big switch-on will feature live music and other entertainment on a stage in Cathedral Square from 4pm to 7pm, plus a festive parade from The Hive.

A Worcester City Council spokesman said: “It’s exciting to see the Christmas trees being installed in Worcester, as the festive excitement starts to build.

“Over the next few days the trees will be decorated, ready for the thrilling Christmas lights switch-on event in Cathedral Square on Saturday 25 November.

“Come along, bring the family and enjoy the live entertainment from 4pm.”

A starlight lantern parade will make its way from The Hive to Cathedral Square on the night.

The parade will be led by volunteers and puppeteers, taking invitees on a route that will light the streets and show off the volunteers’ lantern creations to the public lining the route in Broad Street and High Street.

It will also feature four six-foot lanterns inspired by The Nutcracker.
