NEARLY 5,000 people were caught by one of the city's most prominent speed cameras in the space of a year.
The A44 New Road speed camera resulted in 4,828 notices of intended prosecution being issued as a result of speeding between November 1, 2022 and November 1 this year.
Out of those that were caught by the speed camera, 3,554 were offered a speed awareness course and 902 received a fixed penalty notice - which includes penalty points and a fine.
There were 372 cases which were processed in court.
According to West Mercia Police, the speed camera on the A44 New Road is a 'Gatso speed camera', which uses radar technology to measure a vehicle's speed.
According to speedcamerasuk.com, if a motorist is driving above the road speed limit then two photos are taken in quick succession using a powerful flash to show the rear of the vehicle.
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "The fixed GATSO speed camera on New Road, Worcester satisfies all requirements in terms of its location and operation.
"The road is a restricted 30mph speed limit, governed by the presence of street lighting and the camera is housed in a visible yellow casing with clear markings on the road.
"Warning signs to indicate that a speed camera is in operation are not a legal requirement but there is a visible speed camera warning sign in place on the approach to this camera.
"All speed cameras are calibrated to verify that the camera equipment meets requirements."
