A former antique shop could be converted into a takeaway and flats according to new plans.

The empty building on the corner of Barbourne Road and Hebb Street in Worcester, which was home to PJ Hughes Antiques, looks set for a new lease of life as a takeaway.

A planning application by Pshdar Khidr has been submitted to Worcester City Council asking for permission to convert the former shop’s cellar and first floor into two separate one-bed flats.

PJ Hughes Antiques closed after 40 years last September with owners Jeff and Pamela Hughes retiring.

The council’s conservation panel, which was commenting on the application as despite the building being unlisted it does sit within the Foregate Street and Tything conservation area, raised no objections earlier this year.

A statement included with the application said: “The property has remained closed and unused as a retail shop for a period of time. The scheme is to put the shop to be leased again as a retail shop as before by the new owners with the storeroom to the rear of the shop also being retained.

“The new owners are taking the opportunity to put the first-floor store room back to its previous use as a flat above the shop.”

Earlier this year, permission was given to convert another of Barbourne Road's antique shops into flats.

Le Mooch in Barbourne Road revealed it was battling to stay open with the city antique shop leaving its doors closed more often than not after seeing walk-in trade drop.

Worcester City Council’s planning committee gave the green light for the shop to be converted into two new one-bed flats despite concerns over the size of the small flats.

The council's planner also recently approved a planning application to convert the floors above nearby antique shop Treasure Trove in Barbourne Road from a four-bed house of multiple occupation (HMO) into a five-bed HMO.

You can view the plan by visiting Worcester City Council’s website. The application number is 23/00875/FUL and consultation ends on November 23.
