AN angry dad has compared bike theft in the city to 'a plague' after two of his family's bicycles and the wheel from a third were stolen in a single night.

Dawid Koziełek said the two bikes were stolen from his home in Checketts Lane in Worcester last Saturday, including a new one bought as a present for his 15-year-old daughter.

One of the stolen bikes was a white Carrera and the other blue graphite Carrera, only purchased from Halford's on June 15 this year. The thieves also left two other bikes at the scene which Mr Koziełek fears may have been stolen from other city victims.

The white Carrera was 10 years old and Mr Koziełek paid £230 for it while the bike for his daughter cost the family £370. He recorded the frame number for his daughter's bike as AJ40103121 in the hope it might help them recover it.

Thieves cut off the bike locks and left them lying on the ground in the family's back yard and also abandoned two other bikes at the scene which he says may belong, potentially, to other victims of crime.

The 37-year-old said: "There is a plague of stolen pushbikes in Worcester. Last Saturday my two pushbikes were stolen from the yard by my flat.

"From the third one, a wheel was taken because thieves could not break the lock.

"Not so long ago a bike was stolen from the bike shed in Worcester Bosch and the next day two bikes were stolen. A week ago my mate from work had his bike stolen too.

"My daughter was in shock. They must have had a tool for breaking the locks."

Although the bikes were not insured, he is making enquiries with the building administrator to see if there is any cover that might apply.

He took a day off work on Monday to report the thefts at Worcester Police Station. He also reported the thefts online and was given a crime reference 22/96474/23.

In a message, West Mercia said: "We understand the impact that crime can have and we want to reassure you that the information you have provided to us is important."

The message also says the crime has been 'allocated for further investigation'.

Those with information can contact West Mercia Police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting the incident reference.
