MEMORY walks in honour of a beloved dad who died with Alzheimer's Disease have now raised more than £5,000, leaving a family overwhelmed as the fight continues to find a cure.

Two memory walks - one in Worcester and one in Ludlow - have now raised £2,758 for the Alzheimer's Society, added to last year's funds and making a grand total of £5,385.

Both this year's walks were held in memory of  Doug Jackson, 81, of Bevere, near Worcester who suffered from both Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease before his death.

His daughter Kay Brearley and her husband, Lee Brearley, both 57, of Lavender Road, Worcester welcomed the support they received in both memory walks, one in Worcester on September 30 and the other in Ludlow on October 8.

The five-mile walk started at the Pitchcroft car park by the Pump House, heading along the river to Diglis Bridge and back along the river to the Pump House.

Kay Bearley said:  "We are over the moon and as these were our last fundraising walks we feel that we’ve gone out on a high. We’re just overwhelmed with people's generosity.

"We have put a lot of time and energy into this year's walks and are grateful that the money we have raised has more than added to last year's total. We want to go out on a high with our memory walks but will be thinking of other ways that we can support the charity in the future."

Doug Jackson was a former mechanic, costing engineer and draughtsman and died on October 8, 2021, having only been diagnosed the year before.

However, his family say he continues to be a source of inspiration to them in fundraising to help others with Alzheimer's Disease.

The latest figures show there are over 9,900 people living with dementia in Worcestershire alone, over 84,000 across the West Midlands and around 900,000 across the UK.

Mr Jackson was born in Mill Street, Ludlow on September 14, 1939, educated at Ludlow Grammar school and initially worked for the MEB as a draughtsman but in 1961 he was called up for National Service and was posted to Tripoli.
